- Foods to Avoid with Fibromyalgia What Studies Reveal About Aspartame Artificial Citric Acid and Sugars
Fibromyalgia affects millions worldwide, causing chronic pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. While its exact cause remains unclear, many patients report that certain foods worsen their symptoms. Scientific studies increasingly explore how specific dietary components may influence fibromyalgia, shedding light on substances like aspartame, artificial citric acid, and sugars. This post examines research findings to help you understand which foods might aggravate fibromyalgia and why avoiding them could improve your quality of life. Processed food packaging showing artificial additives Aspartame and Fibromyalgia Symptoms Aspartame is an artificial sweetener found in many diet sodas, sugar-free gums, and low-calorie products. Its safety has been debated for years, but recent studies suggest it may have particular effects on people with fibromyalgia. Neurological Impact: Aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. These compounds can affect neurotransmitter balance, potentially worsening neurological symptoms like brain fog and headaches common in fibromyalgia. A 2017 study published in Clinical Rheumatology found that some fibromyalgia patients reported increased pain and cognitive difficulties after consuming aspartame-containing products. Inflammatory Response: Research indicates that aspartame may trigger mild inflammatory responses in sensitive individuals. Since fibromyalgia involves central nervous system sensitization, even small inflammatory triggers can amplify pain perception. Individual Sensitivity: Not everyone with fibromyalgia reacts to aspartame, but those who do often notice symptom flare-ups within hours of consumption. Keeping a food diary can help identify if aspartame-containing foods worsen your symptoms. Practical Advice Check labels for aspartame, especially in diet sodas, sugar-free desserts, and some medications. Consider natural sweeteners like coconut sugar or raw, local honey if you need sweetness. Discuss with your healthcare provider before making significant dietary changes as dietary changes can impact your health and require reductions in some medications. Manufactured Citric Acid and Its Role in Fibromyalgia Citric acid is a common food additive used to enhance flavor and preserve freshness. While naturally occurring in citrus fruits, the manufactured version is often derived from mold fermentation, which can introduce impurities. Potential Allergic Reactions: Some fibromyalgia patients report sensitivity to manufactured citric acid, experiencing increased muscle pain and digestive issues. A 2019 survey in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Journal noted that 25% of respondents identified citric acid as a trigger for symptom worsening. Mold-Derived Contaminants: Since industrial citric acid is produced using Aspergillus niger, black mould, trace amounts of mycotoxins or fungal residues might remain. These contaminants could provoke immune responses in susceptible individuals, aggravating fibromyalgia symptoms. Digestive Discomfort: Manufactured citric acid can irritate the gut lining, leading to bloating and discomfort. Given that many fibromyalgia patients also suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), this additive may exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms. How to Avoid Manufactured Citric Acid Avoid processed foods with “citric acid” listed in the ingredients, especially soft drinks, candies, and canned goods. Opt for fresh fruits instead of fruit-flavored snacks or drinks. When cooking, use natural lemon or lime juice instead of commercial citric acid powders. Sugars and Fibromyalgia Symptom Flare-Ups Sugar consumption is linked to inflammation and immune system activation, both relevant to fibromyalgia. Several studies highlight how sugars, especially refined and added sugars, can worsen symptoms. Inflammation and Pain: A 2020 study in Pain Medicine showed that high sugar intake correlates with increased inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) in fibromyalgia patients. Elevated inflammation can heighten pain sensitivity. Energy Crashes and Fatigue: Sugars cause rapid blood sugar spikes followed by crashes, which may worsen fatigue and cognitive fog in fibromyalgia. Stable blood sugar levels support better energy management. Gut Microbiome Effects: Excess sugar feeds harmful gut bacteria, potentially disrupting the microbiome balance. Since gut health influences inflammation and pain, sugar overconsumption might indirectly worsen fibromyalgia symptoms. Tips to Manage Sugar Intake Limit foods with added sugars such as sweets, pastries, and sugary beverages. Choose whole fruits over fruit juices or sugary snacks. Read nutrition labels carefully to identify hidden sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, and maltose. Other Foods to Watch for with Fibromyalgia While aspartame, manufactured citric acid, and sugars have strong evidence linking them to symptom aggravation, other foods may also cause issues: Gluten: Some fibromyalgia patients benefit from gluten-free diets, possibly due to overlapping sensitivities or celiac disease. Processed Meats: Contain preservatives and additives that may trigger inflammation. Excessive Caffeine: Can worsen sleep problems and increase anxiety, common fibromyalgia symptoms. How to Approach Dietary Changes Safely Changing your diet can feel overwhelming, especially when symptoms fluctuate. Here are practical steps: Keep a Symptom and Food Diary: Track what you eat and how you feel to identify triggers. This is the best mindful diary for fibromyalgia (i did make it!) Elimination Diets: Remove suspected foods like aspartame or citric acid for a few weeks, then reintroduce them to observe effects. Consult Professionals: Work with a dietitian or holistic healthcare provider familiar with fibromyalgia to ensure balanced nutrition. Focus on Whole Foods: Emphasize fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support overall health. Personally, alkaline was the way forward on my healing journey. Download a free alkaline foods list here. Summary Scientific research points to aspartame, manufactured citric acid, and sugars as dietary components that may worsen fibromyalgia symptoms through neurological effects, inflammation, and gut irritation. - Understanding Oxalates: How Hydration and Calcium Can Mitigate Their Toxic Effects and Support Your Health
Oxalates are naturally occurring compounds found in many plant-based foods. While they serve various roles in plants, oxalates can pose health challenges when consumed in excess. This post explores how oxalates can become toxic, the role of calcium and hydration in reducing their harmful effects, and practical ways to protect your body from oxalate-related damage. Fresh spinach leaves close-up, a common source of dietary oxalates. What Are Oxalates and Why Do They Matter? Oxalates, or oxalic acid, are organic compounds found in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains. Common high-oxalate foods include spinach, rhubarb, beet greens, nuts, chocolate, and tea. When consumed, oxalates can bind with minerals like calcium to form crystals. In small amounts, oxalates are harmless. But when oxalate levels rise too high, they can contribute to health problems such as kidney stones, joint pain, and inflammation. The body struggles to eliminate excess oxalates, especially if hydration or mineral balance is off. How Oxalates Can Be Toxic Oxalate toxicity mainly arises when oxalates accumulate and form crystals in the body. These crystals can: Cause kidney stones: Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stones. They form when oxalates bind with calcium in the kidneys and urinary tract. Trigger inflammation: Oxalate crystals can irritate tissues, leading to pain and swelling in joints or muscles. Interfere with nutrient absorption: Oxalates can bind minerals like calcium and magnesium in the gut, reducing their availability. Contribute to oxidative stress: High oxalate levels may increase free radicals, which can damage cells. People with certain health conditions, such as kidney disease or digestive disorders, are more vulnerable to oxalate toxicity. How Calcium Helps Neutralize Oxalates Calcium plays a crucial role in managing oxalate levels. When calcium is present in the digestive tract, it binds with oxalates to form calcium oxalate, which is poorly absorbed and excreted in stool. This process reduces the amount of oxalate entering the bloodstream and kidneys. Eating calcium-rich foods alongside high-oxalate foods can prevent oxalate absorption. For example: Adding cheese or yogurt to a spinach salad Drinking milk with a chocolate snack Including calcium-fortified drinks with meals Calcium supplements may also help, but again not too much, avoid excess calcium intake. The Role of Hydration in Oxalate Management Water intake significantly affects how the body handles oxalates. Proper hydration dilutes urine, reducing the concentration of oxalates and calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys. This lowers the risk of stone formation and helps flush out oxalates more efficiently. Tips for staying well-hydrated include: Drinking at least 8 cups (about 2 liters) of water daily, or more if active or in hot climates Consuming water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon Avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate Maintaining good hydration supports kidney function and overall detoxification. Lemon added to your water is great for helping your body rid oxalates. Other Ways Oxalates Affect Your Body Beyond kidney stones, oxalates can impact health in several ways: Joint and muscle pain: Oxalate crystals may deposit in soft tissues, causing discomfort or stiffness. Gut health issues: High oxalate intake can irritate the gut lining, worsening symptoms in people with irritable bowel syndrome or leaky gut. Skin problems: Some individuals report rashes or itching linked to oxalate sensitivity. Fatigue and brain fog: Though less studied, some people experience systemic symptoms possibly related to oxalate build up. These effects vary widely depending on individual sensitivity, diet, and overall health. Common Sources of Oxalates in Your Diet Oxalates are present in many everyday foods, often without people realizing it. Some common sources include: Leafy greens: spinach, beet greens, Swiss chard Vegetables: rhubarb, okra, sweet potatoes Nuts: almonds, cashews, peanuts Fruits: starfruit, Grains and legumes: quinoa, soy products Beverages: black tea, cocoa, coffee Reducing oxalate intake involves identifying and moderating these foods, especially if you are prone to kidney stones or oxalate sensitivity. Best Ways to Reverse Oxalate Damage If you suspect oxalate-related health issues, several strategies can help reduce damage and support recovery: Increase calcium intake with meals: This prevents oxalate absorption and promotes excretion. Stay well hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps flush oxalates from the kidneys. Limit high-oxalate foods: Gradually reduce intake of the highest oxalate sources while maintaining a balanced diet. Improve gut health: Probiotics and a fiber-rich diet can support oxalate breakdown by gut bacteria. Avoid excessive vitamin C supplements: High doses convert to oxalates in the body keep supplements to less then 1,000mg a day. Consult a healthcare professional: For personalized advice, especially if you have kidney stones or other symptoms. In some cases, medical treatment may be necessary to address severe oxalate build up. Supporting Your Health with Balanced Oxalate Intake Understanding oxalates and how they interact with calcium and hydration empowers you to make better dietary choices. By pairing calcium-rich foods with oxalate-containing meals and drinking enough water, you can reduce the risk of oxalate toxicity and support kidney health. The Natural Edge: Advantages of Food-Extracted Supplements Over Synthetic Alternatives In our quest for optimal health and wellness, dietary supplements have become a staple for many. They promise to fill nutritional gaps, boost energy, and support overall well-being. However, not all supplements are created equal. There's a growing debate between food-extracted supplements and their synthetic counterparts, with an increasing number of health enthusiasts leaning towards the former. But what exactly sets food-extracted supplements apart, and why might they be the better choice for your health journey? Let's delve into the advantages of opting for nature’s own offerings. 1. Bioavailability and Absorption One of the primary advantages of food-extracted supplements is their superior bioavailability. This term refers to the extent and rate at which the active ingredients are absorbed and utilized by the body. Nutrients derived from whole foods are often more easily recognized and absorbed by the body compared to synthetic versions. This is largely because food-extracted supplements come with a natural matrix of co-factors, such as enzymes and other nutrients, that facilitate absorption and enhance the effectiveness of the primary nutrient. 2. Synergistic Benefits In nature, nutrients don’t exist in isolation; they work synergistically to promote health. For example, vitamin C from whole foods is accompanied by a range of bioflavonoids and other phytochemicals that enhance its function and absorption. This synergy is often lost in synthetic supplements, which typically offer a single, isolated nutrient - ascorbic acid. By choosing food-extracted supplements, you benefit from this natural synergy, potentially leading to greater health outcomes. 3. Reduced Risk of Toxicity Synthetic supplements, especially when consumed in high doses, can sometimes lead to toxicity or adverse side effects. This is partly because the body is not accustomed to processing isolated, high-concentration nutrients. In contrast, food-extracted supplements tend to have a more balanced nutrient profile, reducing the risk of overconsumption and toxicity. They provide nutrients in a form that the body is naturally equipped to handle. 4. Whole Food Benefits Food-extracted supplements often retain the benefits of the whole food from which they are derived. This includes essential fibers, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients that play vital roles in maintaining health. These components are usually absent in synthetic supplements, which focus on isolated compounds. The comprehensive nutrient profile of food-extracted supplements can support various aspects of health beyond just the targeted deficiency. 5. Fewer Additives and Fillers Synthetic supplements often contain artificial additives, fillers, and preservatives to enhance shelf life, taste, bioavailability or appearance. These can include dyes, artificial sweeteners, and chemical stabilizers, some of which have no safety data on human consumption, which may not be ideal for those seeking a cleaner, more natural lifestyle. Food-extracted supplements are generally free from these artificial additives, offering a more natural and often safer choice for consumers. 6. Environmental and Ethical Considerations Choosing food-extracted supplements can also be an environmentally and ethically responsible choice. These supplements are often derived from sustainably sourced whole foods, supporting agricultural practices that are kinder to the planet. Additionally, many companies producing food-extracted supplements prioritize fair trade and ethical sourcing, ensuring that the communities involved in their production benefit fairly. AS they are foot extracted they also leave no pollutant residues. 7. Alignment with Natural Diets For individuals following specific dietary philosophies, such as organic, vegan, or paleo, food-extracted supplements are often more aligned with these lifestyles. They offer a way to supplement diets while staying true to the principles of consuming natural, minimally processed foods. In conclusion, while synthetic supplements may offer convenience and often come at a lower price point, the advantages of food-extracted supplements are compelling. They offer a more natural, holistic approach to supplementation, aligning closely with the body’s innate nutritional requirements. By embracing the power of nature, you may find a more effective and harmonious path to health and wellness. I have been using the brand Earthier for almost 2 years (as of writing this). - Healing with earthing: The benefits of earthing
In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, many of us have become increasingly disconnected from nature. This disconnection can manifest in various physical and mental health issues. However, a simple practice known as "earthing" or "grounding" is gaining popularity as a way to reconnect with the Earth and promote healing and well-being. In this blog post, we'll explore what earthing is, how it works, and the benefits of using an earthing sheet or mat. What is Earthing? Earthing, also known as grounding, is the practice of physically connecting with the Earth. This can be done by walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, sand, or soil, or by using specialized products designed to facilitate a connection with the Earth's energy. The fundamental idea behind earthing is that direct physical contact with the Earth allows the transfer of electrons from the ground into the body, which can help neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation. How Does Earthing Work? The Earth has a natural, subtle electrical charge that is essential to the health of all living organisms. Our bodies operate electrically – the heart, brain, nervous system, and immune system all rely on electrical signals to function correctly. In today's world, we are often insulated from the Earth's energy by synthetic materials like rubber-soled shoes and buildings. Earthing helps to restore this lost connection and balance the body's electrical environment. When you make direct contact with the Earth, electrons flow into your body, which can have numerous health benefits. These electrons are believed to act as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful free radicals that contribute to inflammation and disease. ### Benefits of Earthing Research into earthing is still emerging, but many people report a wide range of benefits, including: 1. Reduction in Inflammation : Studies suggest that earthing can reduce inflammation by neutralizing free radicals. This can be beneficial for chronic inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. 2. Improved Sleep : Many people report better sleep quality after earthing, possibly due to the regulation of cortisol levels and alignment of the body's circadian rhythm. 3. Enhanced Mood and Energy Levels : Connecting with the Earth's energy can lead to improved mood and increased energy, potentially reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. 4. Faster Recovery from Exercise : Athletes and fitness enthusiasts may experience quicker recovery times and reduced muscle soreness. 5. Reduced Stress : Earthing can promote relaxation and reduce stress by calming the nervous system. ### Benefits of an Earthing Sheet For those who can't regularly go barefoot outdoors, an earthing sheet is a convenient alternative. An earthing sheet is a conductive sheet that you place on your bed, allowing you to connect with the Earth's energy while you sleep. These sheets are typically made with conductive silver threads and are connected to the ground port of a standard electrical outlet or directly to the Earth via a grounding rod. Some benefits of using an earthing sheet include: Convenience : You can enjoy the benefits of earthing without leaving the comfort of your home. - Improved Sleep Quality : Many users report deeper, more restful sleep when using an earthing sheet. - Pain Relief : Regular use of an earthing sheet may help reduce pain and inflammation. - Overall Well-being : By reconnecting with the Earth's energy, you may experience enhanced overall health and well-being. Conclusion Earthing is a simple, natural practice that can offer a wide range of health benefits. Whether you choose to walk barefoot outside or use an earthing sheet, reconnecting with the Earth's energy can be a powerful tool for healing and wellness. As research into this fascinating area continues to grow, more people are likely to discover the profound effects of earthing on both physical and mental health. Embrace the healing power of the Earth and see how it can transform your life. If you don't have 30 minutes a day for earthing here is a link for grounding sheets and mats .

By harnessing the power of quantum energy, we can tap into the underlying energetic patterns that influence our health and well-being. So how exactly does quantum energy healing work? It involves the practitioner using intention, focused attention, and various techniques to direct healing energy to the client. This energy can be channeled through the practitioner's hands, or even remotely through intention and visualization. The healing energy works on a deep level, addressing the root causes of imbalances and promoting self-healing. One of the key benefits of quantum energy healing is its ability to address not just the physical symptoms, but also the underlying emotional and energetic imbalances that contribute to our health issues. For example, if you're struggling with chronic pain, quantum energy healing can help release the energetic blockages that are causing the pain, while also addressing any emotional or energetic patterns that may be contributing to it. Quantum energy healing can also be a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. By working with the energetic patterns that underlie our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, we can release old patterns and create new ones that support our health and well-being. This can lead to profound shifts in our lives, helping us to overcome limiting beliefs, release emotional baggage, and step into our true potential. If you're interested in experiencing the transformative power of quantum energy healing, it's important to find a qualified practitioner who resonates with you. Meditation, breathwork, and visualization are all powerful tools for connecting with your own inner healing energy. - Discover the Power of Ayurvedic Medicine
In today's fast-paced world, finding balance and harmony in our lives can be a challenge. We often neglect our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, leading to various health issues. However, there is an ancient practice that can help us restore balance and achieve optimal health - Ayurvedic medicine. In this blog post, we will explore the power of Ayurvedic medicine and how it can transform your life. 1. Understanding Ayurvedic Medicine: Ayurvedic medicine is a holistic healing system that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It focuses on the balance between mind, body, and spirit to promote overall well-being. Ayurveda believes that each person is unique and has a specific mind-body constitution known as doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. By understanding your dosha, you can tailor your lifestyle, diet, and therapies to achieve balance. 2. Healing Herbs and Spices: One of the key aspects of Ayurvedic medicine is the use of natural herbs and spices. These powerful ingredients have been used for centuries to promote healing and restore balance. For example, turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, while ashwagandha helps reduce stress and anxiety. Incorporating these herbs and spices into your daily routine can have a profound impact on your health. 3. Ayurvedic Massage and Therapies: Ayurvedic massages and therapies are deeply relaxing and rejuvenating. They aim to balance the doshas, release toxins, and promote overall well-being. Abhyanga, a full-body massage using warm herbal oils, is a popular Ayurvedic therapy that helps nourish the skin, improve circulation, and calm the mind. Other therapies such as Shirodhara (pouring warm oil on the forehead) and Panchakarma (a detoxification process) can also be beneficial. 4. Ayurvedic Diet and Nutrition: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of mindful eating and choosing foods that are in harmony with your dosha. For example, Vata types benefit from warm, grounding foods, while Pitta types thrive on cooling and soothing foods. Kapha types benefit from light, spicy foods. By aligning your diet with your dosha, you can improve digestion, boost energy levels, and maintain a healthy weight. 5. Ayurvedic Lifestyle Practices: In addition to diet and therapies, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle practices to promote balance and well-being. These include practicing yoga and meditation, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a daily routine. Ayurveda also emphasizes the importance of self-care and self-love, as nurturing oneself is essential for overall health. Conclusion: Ayurvedic medicine offers a holistic approach to health and wellness, focusing on the mind, body, and spirit connection. By incorporating Ayurvedic principles into your life, you can experience profound transformations and achieve optimal well-being. Whether it's through herbal remedies, therapeutic massages, or mindful eating, Ayurveda has the power to restore balance and bring harmony to your life.
